Sole practitioners and independent contractors are now eligible for unemployment benefits!
Some states are requesting that sole practitioners / independent contracts wait to apply for these benefits until the state's unemployment website is set up for these new applications, and that may be in the last half of April. You may have read about logjams in processing these unemployment applications and other new benefits created by the CARES Act (Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act).
Also, small business owners, including sole proprietors and independent contractors, may now be eligible for up to a $10,000 “advance" that does not need to be repaid (so it’s effectively a grant). These programs are administered by the Small Business Administration (Economic Injury Disaster Loan and Loan Advance programs -EIDL- www.SBA.gov/Disaster).
